Denny Palmer Tourney Prizes, Ice Fishing Spots, To Be Awarded Differently
The Mobridge Area Chamber's Tourism Committee is hard at work preparing for this year's Denny Palmer Memorial Walleye Classic next weekend, June 13-14. Besides rounding up $16,000 in cash and prizes, an increase from last year, the Committee is busy buying supplies and scheduling set-up volunteers for the Social Hour & Rules Meeting on Friday, June 13. Social Hour is starting at 6 p.m followed by a short Rules Meeting at 8 p.m. All anglers must be present at the Rules Meeting on Friday to be eligible for the tournament on Saturday.
On Saturday, June 14, boat inspections start at 7 a.m., and the boat launch starts at 7:45 at Indian Creek Recreation Area. The tournament anglers can fish until 3:30 p.m. when the weigh-in starts. In years past, the winners were awarded immediately following the weigh-in, which was difficult for anglers who needed to get their boats out of the marina area. This year, the Committee is going to solve that problem by waiting to announce winners. The Results and Awards Celebration will be held at Scherr Howe Event Center on Main St. in Mobridge starting at 6 p.m.
This tournament is great for both beginner and experienced anglers. The tournament is capped at 150 team boats. Each team can include 2-3 people. The tournament uses the state's regulations for the tournament's limit. Each team can weigh in 6 fish (2 fish 20 inches and over, and 4 under). No culling or sorting will be allowed. There is an 80% payback for the top 25% of teams with the highest weigh-in totals, starting with $3,000 for first place. Teams can keep their fish or donate them. Twelve-year-olds Kregen and Joshua Norder will be on site cleaning fish for $.50 each (1/2 goes to their college funds) if you don't want to clean your own.
This year, the Tourism Committee will be awarding 5 guaranteed spots in the Chamber's Annual Mobridge Ice Fishing Tournament at the Denny Palmer Tournament. The spots will be drawn at random at the Results and Awards Celebration from tournament participants. There will also be raffle tables and refreshments for purchase at both the Social Hour & Rules Meeting and the Results and Awards Celebration. To register your team, please contact the Chamber by noon on Friday, June 13 at firstname.lastname@example.org or 605-845-2387. Online registration is also available here as is a printable copy of the official Registration & Tournament Rules.
